چکیده

A reflective-type polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) cell was demonstrated at 1⁄4 1550 nm laser wavelength. It showed a high attenuation range ( 30 dB), a low operating voltage ( 12Vrms), a highly efficient polarizationindependent behavior and flat wavelength dependence in the range of 1525–1575 nm. The combined effects of curing temperature, chiral dopant, and monomer concentration were investigated and optimized to maximally improve the PSCLC properties. The potential application of PSCLC as a polarization-independent variable optical attenuator is emphasized. [DOI: 10.1143/JJAP.43.7083]

Variable optical attenuator with a polymer-stabilized dual-frequency liquid crystal.

A transmission-type variable optical attenuator (VOA) based on a polymer-stabilized dual-frequency liquid crystal (PSDFLC) is demonstrated at gamma = 1.55 microm. The VOA is highly transparent in the voltage-off state but scatters light in the voltage-on state. By using a birefringent beam displacer incorporated with half-wave plates, we can obtain a VOA that is polarization independent and tha...

Variable optical attenuator based on polymer stabilized twisted nematic liquid crystal.

A variable optical attenuator (VOA) based on polymer stabilized twisted nematic (PSTN) liquid crystal (LC) is demonstrated. Comparing with the normal twisted nematic LC-based VOA, PSTN exhibits a much faster response time. Moreover, the polymer networks effectively eliminate the backflow effect which exists in the normal TNLC cell. The attenuation mechanism of the PSTN LC was studied. Both pola...

Submillisecond response variable optical attenuator based on sheared polymer network liquid crystal.

We demonstrate a variable optical attenuator (VOA) at lambda=1.55 microm using a sheared polymer network liquid crystal (SPNLC). The SPNLC exhibits a fast response time and weak wavelength dependency. Comparing with other polymer-stabilized liquid crystals, the SPNLC has lower driving voltage and negligible light scattering loss when the wavelength exceeds 700 nm. A reflection type VOA with ~0....

Interlaced cholesteric liquid crystal fingerprint textures via sequential UV-induced polymer- stabilization

Two types of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) fingerprint structures, namely developable-modulation (DM) and growing-modulation (GM), can be contemporaneously prepared in polymer stabilized CLC (PSCLC) composites, to be mutually perpendicular in a repeatable and reversible voltage-switching process when the cell thickness to pitch length ratios (d/P) were appropriately chosen. PSCLC grating str...

Asymmetric tunable Fabry-Perot cavity using switchable polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal optical Bragg mirror

Optical properties of an asymmetric Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity interferometer made up of a conventional metallic mirror and a polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) Bragg mirror have been investigated. The first FP cavity design comprises a gold mirror, an iso-tropic layer made up of the polymer glue, a quarter wave plate to convert the input linearly polarized modes into the circul...
